Friendship is a promise spoken by the heart.
It is not given by any pledge nor written on any paper.
It is a promise renewed every time we keep in touch.
~quote from The Rose Cottage"

✿ I occasionally have puppies available for show.

✿ Those puppies going to pet homes are sold under a spay/neuter contract and limited AKC Papers.

✿ All puppies are vaccinated and dewormed in accordance to their age.

✿ All puppies are socialized, played with and potty training has been done.

Pet or show quality puppy?

I often get calls or e-mails from people looking to add a purebred dog to their households. More often than not, the caller or writer specifies that he wants ‘just a pet,’ so he doesn’t want to pay a lot of money for a puppy. Most know that the most reliable source of a puppy is a responsible breeder who does health checks, breeds for good temperament, and backs up his/her puppies with a contract and a health guarantee.

Since conformation showing is judged on a dog’s appearance in relation to the written standard or description of the breed, flaws as simple as color, markings, coat texture and the size of a puppy can prevent a puppy from being graded show quality by its breeder.

Show dog breeders usually develop a certain signature look to the kennel. A kennel may be known for certain head type (style), certain color, build, and movement. The breeder will be able to recognize, even in eight-week-old puppies, which puppies best represent the breeding program and therefore should be placed, if possible, where they will be shown and potentially bred. Other puppies may be wonderful show prospects also but we may choose to place those show quality puppies in companion homes as we can not keep and show them all.

Heavenly Miniature Schnauzers takeds our breeding program very seriously. It takes a lot of time, energy, effort and money to breed dogs well. It is a labor of love, one that does not end when a puppy is sold, but continues when the puppy is placed with a family. Each puppy is a life-long commitment for the breeder. It will be backed up with a written contract. That contract says the breeder will be there for that buyer, to answer questions or to assist in training. It says the breeder stands behind that puppy for all times, even if, God forbid, there is a problem.

Show breeders can’t afford to have anything other than a healthy, reputable breeding program. Most of my puppies are sold through word of mouth from satisfied customers,  veterinarians and other dog people. Just as certain as the pet puppy buyer wants a healthy, happy, long-lived dog, the show dog breeder wants a healthy, happy, long-lived home for every puppy. Pet homes are every bit, if not more, important than show homes.

As much as dog lovers melt over a cute, cuddly puppy, when it comes time to actually buy a dog, price sensitivity enters into it puppies can ranged in price from around $500 for a dog from a backyard breeder or a pet store to upwards of $3,000 for a show quality pup from a top breeder. Here’s the truth in one sentence: The initial purchase price of a dog is a drop in the bucket compared to the other expenses of dog ownership.

A quality breeder does two important things. He (or she) has the potential parents checked for heart problems, eye problems, and if the dogs don’t get these clearances, they’re not bred. They also breed for temperament, and can tell you if a dog from any given litter is likely to be a show dog or laid-back, lick-your-face couch queen. Most importantly, parents with behavioral problems–from biting to skittishness–don’t make it to the breeding pool.

And if a $500 puppy mill dog ends up with eye or a heart condition or a thyroid condition, you could easily swallow that $500 difference in a single vet visit, and still have a dog with a shortened life, or a compromised quality of life. And while quality breeders will offer a refund if your puppy has a serious health problem, the far better alternative is not having to use that guarantee. Good breeders aren’t cheap or easy to find, but they tend to be cheaper than the best dog heart surgeon, or the best canine behaviorist.
